The next major move was an Ottoman assault on Malta in 1565 which failed after an epic siege and a last-minute relief by Habsburg forces. In 1570, the Ottomans occupied Venice-controlled Cyprus. This led to the formation of a Christian league of Venice, Spain and its Italian territories, the Pope and minor Christian powers under Habsburg command.
