Patriots urged the colonies to seek independence from Britain. In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act, granting the East India Company the exclusive right to sell tea to the American colonies. New Jerseyans burned a shipload of tea docked in Greenwich, in open rebellion of the new law. Protest turned into war with a clash between British troops and Patriots at Lexington, Massachusetts, in April 1775. In July of the following year, delegates from the thirteen colonies declared independence from Great Britain.

Several tragedies drew the world's attention to New Jersey during the 1930s. In 1932, the baby son of famous pilot Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from the Lindberghs' mansion in Hopewell; the child's body was later found nearby. In 1934, beachgoers watched in horror as a burning cruise ship, the Morro Castle, drifted aground off Asbury Park; 134 persons lost their lives. Three years later, the German passenger airship Hindenburg exploded while landing at the United States Naval Air Station at Lakehurst.

At this time, most of New Jersey's 185,000 citizens made their living from the land, growing food for their own use and selling the surplus to feed New York and Philadelphia. Others were craftsworkers or merchants; some fished along the Jersey shore or mined copper and other minerals in the state's northern counties. But like the rest of the young United States, New Jersey's economy relied on agriculture. Apart from glassmaking, the state had little industry. The nation's brilliant secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton, wanted to change this situation.
