The pragmatic approach includes a somewhat miscellaneous group of researchers and play advocates, some of whom are Hartley, Frank, and Goldensen, who worked in nursery schools; Johnson and Lee, who were associated with the early playground movement; educators like Pestalozzi, Froebel, and Montessori, who were advocates rather than researchers; and others who have written about how to play with your children, as well as children's dramatic play and their toys and playground apparatus. When interpreting the play events in their respective social contexts, Schwartzman (1978) suggests that the play was very much about dominance and manipulation, that it was "both a reflection and interpretation of these concerns" (p. 243). She also suggests that relationships of varying types ("genres" or "play styles,'' as she calls them) were used in play by the children to interpret and comment on their experiencing of their own relationships to each other (p. 245). Schwartzman's (1978) study keeps close to the Batesonian model of the reciprocity and interconnection of structure and content, where each is a comment on the other.
